Roman Mykyta

Roman developed an interest in Ukrainian dancing at an early age and joined the Lyman Ukrainian Dance Ensemble of Baltimore, MD. Shortly after, he began studying ballet in the Cecchetti Method at the National Ballet School in Bowie Maryland under the direction of Pamela Moore. He continued his studies with teachers Bat Udval and Evgenia Singur in the Vaganova Ballet Technique at the Carroll County Dance Center and Ballet Conservatory. In 2014, upon graduating from high school, Roman began his professional career by joining the Ballet Theatre of Maryland under the artistic direction of Dianna Cuatto. He danced with the company for three seasons, performing in many ballets including Cinderella as the Court Jester, Alice in Wonderland as the White Rabbit, soloist roles in Tango Dramatico and Intimate Encounters, and the Trepak and Mirlitons Soloist in The Nutcracker.

He was selected to represent the company, choreograph, and perform an excerpt from the ballet The Red Poppy at the request of the Londontowne Symphony Orchestra. Throughout his career, Roman has continued to maintain a particular emphasis on deepening his knowledge of character and folkloric styles and techniques. He has performed with the Kazka Ukrainian Dance Ensemble of Northeastern Pennsylvania since 2008 and has been privileged to perform as a principal in the premier presentations of original works by Pennsylvania Master Artist Andrij Dobriansky, celebrating Ukrainian history and culture. An original member of the Carpathia Folk Dance Ensemble of Washington DC, he continues to support the ensemble as a ballet master and choreographer. Roman has also founded his own “Spirit of the Dance” Ukrainian Folk Ballet through which he actively collaborates with the Gerdan Ukrainian / World Music Ensemble of Washington DC, creating several pieces to accompany their concerts in addition to developing his own repertoire.

Beginning in 2017, Roman had the opportunity to study in Ukraine as a guest at the Kyiv National University of Culture and Arts, to work with the Studio Company of the Virsky National Ukrainian Folk Ensemble in Kyiv, and to perform with the Horlytsya Ukrainian Dance Ensemble in Kyiv and the Yunist Honored Ukrainian Folk Ensemble in Lviv. He is currently studying dance pedagogy and choreography at the National Pedagogical University Dragomanova in Kyiv, Ukraine. He has taught and choreographed throughout Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Ukraine and is well-regarded for his expertise.
